What Happened?
Major Indian mutual fund houses have paused fresh investments in Gold Exchange-Traded Fund-of-Funds (FoFs), which are mutual fund schemes that invest in a Gold ETF, starting 16 October 2026. Reports say about 17 fund houses have taken this step.
This is different from a Gold ETF you buy directly on NSE or BSE. A Gold FoF is a mutual fund route into gold. The restriction applies to the mutual fund route, not to the exchange-traded Gold ETF itself.
Reports describe the pause as following discussions or instructions from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), passed through the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). We have not yet seen the formal circular, so treat the exact wording of the instruction as unconfirmed until you check the official source (see the sources section).
Why Is This Happening?
Three reasons are being cited in reports:
- Surging gold ETF inflows. Gold ETF inflows rose sharply in September 2026. One report put the figure at about ₹4,451 crore, up 71%. Mutual funds that invest in Gold ETFs must buy physical gold to back the fund, so higher inflows mean more imports.
- Pressure on the rupee and the import bill. Heavy gold imports add to the import bill and put pressure on the rupee and foreign exchange reserves. Curbing fresh inflows is described as a precautionary step.
- Festive season timing. The pause comes just before the Dussehra and Diwali gold-buying season, when demand for physical gold typically rises.
What Has Stopped vs What Continues
| Type of transaction | Status from 16 Oct 2026 |
|---|---|
| Fresh lump-sum investments in Gold FoFs | Stopped |
| New SIP and STP registrations in Gold FoFs | Stopped |
| Top-ups or step-ups on existing SIPs in Gold FoFs | Stopped |
| Existing SIPs and STPs registered before 16 Oct 2026 | Continues normally |
| Redemptions, switch-outs and SWPs | Not restricted |
| Direct Gold ETFs traded on NSE/BSE via Demat | Not blocked |
| Physical gold purchases | Remain open |
Reports differ slightly on whether switch-ins are included in the stop list. Check the fund house’s notice for your scheme.
What Should Investors Do?
If you have an existing Gold FoF SIP: It should continue, but confirm with your fund house or RTA that the registration date is before 16 October 2026.
If you wanted to start a new Gold FoF SIP: It is paused for now. Consider whether a Gold ETF bought through a Demat account or physical gold, fits your plan. Each route has different costs, liquidity and tax treatment.
If you want to redeem: Redemptions are not restricted, so you can still exit as per the scheme’s terms.
If you are considering a Gold ETF: Watch for NAV premiums or discounts. Reports note that shifted demand can widen the gap between a Gold ETF’s market price and its underlying gold value.
Gold FoF vs Gold ETF vs Physical Gold
| Feature | Gold FoF (mutual fund) | Gold ETF (exchange-traded) | Physical gold |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you invest | Through a mutual fund | Through the stock exchange via Demat | Jewellery, coins, or bars |
| Minimum entry | Usually small SIP amounts | One unit of the ETF | Any weight you can afford |
| Current status (Oct 2026) | Fresh investments paused. | Open | Open |
| Liquidity | Redeem through fund house | Sell on exchange | Sell to jeweller, may lose value to making charges |
| Watch out for | Pause, timing of redemption | Premium or discount to NAV | Making charges, purity, storage |
Why This Matters for Indian Gold Investors
Gold has been one of the most-watched assets in India for a reason. Many households use gold as a hedge against currency weakness, and gold accumulation is a long-term habit for many families. A pause in one route does not change gold’s role in a portfolio, but it does change how and where you can add to it right now.
The practical lesson is simple: check the route, not just the asset. A rule that stops a mutual fund route may leave other routes open. Read the notice that applies to your product before you act.
